Can You Use the iPhone Reminders App for Chores?
It is already on your phone, it syncs through iCloud, and it can repeat. So why not run the house on the built-in Reminders app? For some homes it is enough. Here is how to tell.
Quick answer: Yes, for a simple list. The built-in Reminders app can repeat a reminder, share a list with family through iCloud, and assign items to people on that list. What it does not do is keep any kind of score: no streaks, no coins or rewards for kids, and nothing that adds up who did what. If you want those, a chore app like Choru fits better.
What the Reminders app does well
- Repeats. Daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, or a custom rhythm like every 3 weeks.
- Shared lists. Share a list with people through iCloud, and everyone can add and tick items.
- Assigning. In a shared list, you can assign a reminder to one person.
- It is already there. Nothing new to install or learn.
Where it falls short for chores
Reminders is built to remind, and it is good at that. A household needs a little more:
- Nothing adds up. Ticked reminders are tucked away, and there is no view of who did what this week, which is the number that matters when you split chores.
- Nothing for kids. No points or rewards, and everyone on a shared list can edit everything on it.
- One alert per chore. Each dated reminder alerts on its own, so a long chore list means a lot of alerts, or none if you switch them off.
- No streaks. Nothing marks a good week.
If you stick with Reminders
- Make a new list called Chores and share it with your family.
- Add each chore with a date, and set Repeat to its rhythm.
- Assign each chore to a person.
- Now and then, turn on Show Completed to see what got done.
For a couple with a short list, that works well.
What a chore app adds
Choru starts from the same idea, a shared list that repeats, and adds the household parts on top:
- One daily notification with what is due, instead of one per chore.
- Missed chores carry over to today as one row, with how late they are.
- Stats with each person's chores for the week.
- Coins for every chore, rewards you price yourself, and a Kids tab.
- A streak, with rest days and days away so a day off does not break it.
A shared list that keeps score, gently
Repeats, carry-over, coins and streaks, shared with your family.
